What is a private career college, and how is it different from a public college or university?

A private career college is a school that prepares students for a specific job in a short amount of time (usually a few months to two years). Programs are hands-on and based on what employers are looking for instead of covering broad academic subjects like a university degree.

Private career colleges in Ontario are regulated under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005, and must be registered with the province to operate.

What is the difference between the Personal Support Worker (PSW) and Community Services Worker programs?
  • The Personal Support Worker program will train you to provide hands-on personal care, such as patient hygiene, mobility support and daily living assistance, in homes, long-term care homes and other healthcare settings.
  • The Community Services Worker program will prepare you to support individuals and families through case management, counseling support and community-based social services.

If you want direct, hands-on care work, go with PSW. If you’re more interested in casework and social support, pick Community Services Worker.

Still deciding, or want a closer look at what the career path involves? Our guide, How to Become a Community Services Worker in Ontario walks through the education, skills, and job outlook in more detail.

What career outcomes can I expect from my program?

Your program determines your career results. Graduates of the Accounting & Payroll Administration program, for instance, are qualified for positions like bookkeeper, accounts payable/receivable clerk, and payroll administrator. The particular career outcomes for each program you are thinking about might be explained to you by a Placement Co-ordinator.

How can I prepare for job interviews after graduating?

Interview prep looks a little different depending on the field you are entering, so we have built guides tailored to each program. If you are graduating from Accounting & Payroll Administration, our Accounting Interview Questions & Answers Guide walks through the kinds of questions employers actually ask. Heading into a medical office role? The Medical Office Assistant Interview Questions guide covers what to expect. And if childcare is your path, our Childcare Interview Questions and Answers guide will help you walk in prepared.

PSW graduates have a slightly different decision to make before interviews even start – choosing the right agency to work with. Our guide on PSW agencies breaks down what to look for so you can pick one that fits your goals.
